FOOD & DRiNK
The food in Marmaris is indicative of typical Turkish cuisine. With roots in the Ottoman Empire, Turkish cuisine also incorporates influences from other cuisines such as Persian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan. Small dishes known as meze are often eaten as starters with friends and include dishes such as dolma - stuffed grape leaves, hummus and Lountza - a dish of smoked pork loin. Main dishes are largely comprised of lamb or pork and, due to the proximity to the coast, fresh seafood. Aubergines and chickpeas are also very common here, meaning there is also a lot of choice for vegetarians.
As a friendly and largely family-oriented community, Turkish people often entertain and will put on meals or a large spread for their guests. it isn't essential, but taking a gift such as baklava, goes down well with the hosts and shows respect. With the majority of the population praying five times a day, mosques are ubiquitous and usually architecturally stunning buildings. Marmaris is no exception to this with a number of mosques dotted throughout the city.
With a nightlife as varied and diverse as possible, Marmaris is melting pot of late-night eateries, chic coastal bars and nightclubs open until sunrise. Two main areas dominate the Marmaris nightlife, Long Beach in the southern stretch and Bar Street located by the marina. Bar Street is a lively strip of loud music bars and bustling clubs, whereas Long Beach has a more relaxed vibe with cool late-night bars and live music.
